Getting Focused, Keeping it Simple and Direct

Today was redesign the website day. This was occasioned by the imminent delivery of Quadran, and the sneak preview of our Scrum Player project management system for software development.

Getting Focused

Our old website had lots and lots of information on it. Too much information! It didn't tell a story, or alternatively it told too many stories.

In todays competitive marketplace too much information and too many messages is just confusing. So, the goal of today was to get our website focused. Focused on what we do. We used to list services. We used to list capabilities. We used to have all kinds of stuff on our site.

Well, it's gone. Oh the pages are still there. We didn't completely orphan it, but it's in the archive so to speak.

Keep it Simple and Direct

Over the past few years we've developed two great products, MORI, and Quadran. We're now working on our third, Scrum Player, which will be our first Software as a Service offering.

So, in the interest of keeping it simple our front page has eschewed its old message of "Fortune 500 Technologies," and messages of software development and abstract ideas. In its place are simple direct messages:

  • Manage your software project with Scrum Player.
  • Manage your import and distribution business with Quadran.
  • Manage your fraternal/membership based organization with MORI.

Simple and direct!

Simplify, simplify, simplify... Is it essential?

When I code I frequently get a great feeling when I replace 10 lines of code with two lines, or 100 lines with 10. Most truths in coding are usually simple. There's a saying that great designers aren't those who keep adding features, but those who can identify the true essential features and focus our attention on those.

When you're designing a web site, software, document, or product ask yourself, "is this essential?" Think on it. Ponder on it. You might be surprised.
